Blue Cross Blue Shield to begin paying $2.6B after class-action lawsuit: Are you eligible?
Summary
Blue Cross Blue Shield is set to begin distributing $2.67 billion in settlement payments, stemming from a 2020 agreement resolving an antitrust lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged that Blue Cross Blue Shield violated antitrust laws by limiting competition among its health plans, though the company denied any wrongdoing. The funds will be distributed to individuals, insured groups, and their employees who were covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield plans between February 2008 and October 2020.
Approximately $1.78 billion will be allocated to individuals and groups, while $120 million is designated for self-funded accounts. However, to receive a payment, individuals were required to file a claim by November 5, 2021. Those who missed the deadline are not eligible for the settlement.
In addition to the monetary payments, Blue Cross Blue Shield has agreed to modify its business practices “to increase the opportunities for competition” in the health insurance market, according to the settlement websites. Initial payments are scheduled to begin in May 2026.
