Malaysia Corruption Watch (MCW) supports Azam Baki's lawsuit against Bloomberg, asserting his right to defend his reputation legally.

Summary

Malaysia Corruption Watch (MCW) has voiced its support for Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s lawsuit against Bloomberg L.P. MCW president Jais Abdul Karim emphasized that all individuals, including civil servants, possess the right to protect their reputation through legal means, stating that filing a lawsuit is a legitimate response to inaccurate or biased reporting. He clarified that the legal action does not impede press freedom but represents a civilized method for resolving disputes concerning facts and reputation.

Jais further stressed the importance of journalistic responsibility, including fact-checking and balanced reporting, even for international media outlets. He cautioned against media manipulation by parties promoting unverified narratives and warned that unfounded allegations could erode public and investor confidence in Malaysia’s enforcement institutions. MCW urged respect for the legal process and a focus on factual accuracy.

Azam Baki filed the lawsuit following a Bloomberg report on February 10th alleging he owned shares. He is seeking RM100 million in damages, including general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, along with interest and legal costs.
