Jeffrey Epstein's estate agrees to $35M settlement in victim class action
Summary
Jeffrey Epstein's estate has agreed to a settlement of up to $35 million to resolve a class action lawsuit accusing his former lawyer, Darren Indyke, and accountant, Richard Kahn, of aiding and abetting his sex trafficking crimes. The deal, filed in federal court in Manhattan, aims to end a 2024 lawsuit against the co-executors of Epstein’s estate. While the settlement provides a confidential financial avenue for victims who haven't already received compensation, Indyke and Kahn maintain they have not admitted any wrongdoing. Their lawyer, Daniel H. Weiner, stated they agreed to mediate to achieve finality for potential claims against the estate.
This settlement adds to previous payouts from Epstein’s estate, which established a $121 million restitution fund and paid out an additional $49 million in settlements to victims. Lawyers representing the victims argued that Indyke and Kahn facilitated Epstein’s abuses by creating a complex financial network to conceal his activities and compensate those involved.
Boies Schiller Flexner, the law firm representing the victims, has previously secured $365 million in settlements with JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank for allegedly overlooking red flags related to Epstein’s financial dealings. Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail in August 2019.
