Regional land fight: Fort Worth expected to join annexation lawsuit against Willow Park

Fort Worth Report
Fort Worth is expected to join Aledo’s lawsuit against Willow Park, alleging the latter abused Texas’ annexation law.

Summary

The Fort Worth City Council approved a resolution allowing the city attorney to join Aledo in a lawsuit against Willow Park regarding annexation practices. Aledo alleges Willow Park violated state law by attempting to expand its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) – the area outside city limits where a municipality can plan for growth – from the intersection of Bankhead Highway and Nu Energy Drive to FM 1187. Fort Worth’s ETJ also overlaps with the disputed area along Bankhead Highway. The lawsuit seeks a court declaration that Willow Park’s attempted annexations were unlawful. Fort Worth officials believe joining the suit will protect the city’s interests, and the expected filing fees are under $2,500. Willow Park’s interim city manager did not respond to requests for comment.
