Google Settles Lawsuit Claiming It Snooped on Cellular Data of Android Smartphone Users
Summary
Google has agreed to a $135 million settlement in a class action lawsuit accusing it of improperly collecting cellular data from Android smartphone users. The lawsuit alleged that Google’s Android operating system was programmed to gather user data without proper authorization, even when users took steps to limit data collection, such as closing apps or disabling location services. Plaintiffs claimed Google used this data for product development and targeted advertising, characterizing the actions as “conversion.”
While denying any wrongdoing, Google has committed to changes in its data collection practices as part of the settlement. These changes include obtaining explicit consent from users regarding data transfers during phone setup and providing a toggle feature for easier control over data transfers.
Furthermore, Google will disclose these practices in its Google Play terms of service, increasing transparency for users. The settlement awaits judicial approval and covers Android users dating back to November 12, 2017.
