Amazon Agrees to Settle Class Action Lawsuit Alleging Incorrect Denials of Refunds

Amazon will pay $309 million to settle a lawsuit claiming wrongful denial of refunds for product returns.

Summary

Amazon has agreed to a $309 million settlement in a class action lawsuit alleging that customers were incorrectly denied refunds for returned products or did not receive timely refunds, Reuters reported. The lawsuit, filed in 2023, claimed Amazon improperly charged consumers for returned items or failed to issue refunds promptly. While Amazon maintained its return policies were agreed upon by customers, including potential charges for late returns, the company also stated it identified a subset of returns in 2025 where refunds hadn't been properly processed.

Beyond the monetary settlement, Amazon had already issued over $600 million in individual refunds and agreed to improve its return and refund processes. The company denies any wrongdoing as part of the settlement. This case is one of several legal challenges Amazon is facing; a federal judge recently rejected Amazon’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit accusing it of allowing price gouging during the pandemic, and in September 2025, Amazon settled with the FTC for $2.5 billion over allegations of misleading consumers about its Prime subscription program.
