NYC Reaches Settlement With A&E Real Estate Over Unsafe Conditions
Summary
New York City has reached a $2.1 million settlement with A&E Real Estate, along with principals Douglas Eisenberg and Margaret Brunn, and managing agent Brian Garland, to resolve issues of tenant harassment and hazardous living conditions across 14 buildings located in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. The agreement, announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and incoming Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Dina Levy, requires A&E to correct over 4,000 outstanding building code violations and prohibits future tenant harassment.
The city’s Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) Anti-Harassment Unit initiated the action after uncovering widespread unsafe conditions. HPD escalated enforcement, leading to the correction of over 1,000 violations through court orders and enforcement actions, and invested nearly $488,000 in emergency repairs.
Mamdani stated that “Every tenant in New York City has a right to a safe and livable home,” emphasizing the administration’s commitment to accountability and relief for tenants who have endured poor conditions and harassment. Failure to adhere to the settlement terms may result in further legal action and penalties.
