Demotion disguised for dismissal: Former Assassin’s Creed franchise head files $1 million lawsuit against Ubisoft
Summary
Former Assassin’s Creed franchise head Marc-Alexis Cote is suing Ubisoft for CAD $1.3 million (approximately $1 million USD), claiming “constructive dismissal.” Cote alleges that after the formation of Vantage Studios, he was demoted from his leadership role and offered less significant positions – either 'head of production' reporting to a new 'head of franchise,' or leading a smaller Ubisoft franchise. He refused both offers, characterizing them as an unacceptable demotion. The lawsuit claims Ubisoft sought a 'head of franchise' for Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, but Cote wasn’t considered due to the role’s location in France and his unwillingness to relocate.
Ubisoft announced Cote’s “voluntary departure” in October 2023, but Cote maintains he did not choose to leave. In a LinkedIn post, he stated, “I did not make that choice,” and clarified that Ubisoft “decided to transfer the leadership of the Assassin’s Creed franchise to someone else.” He further explained that the offered alternative position lacked the scope and continuity of his previous role.
Cote initially requested two years of severance pay and CAD $75,000 in damages. He expressed gratitude for his time at Ubisoft but emphasized that he did not willingly step down, stating he remained in his position until Ubisoft asked him to leave. He likened his role to a ship captain ensuring the safety of his crew before departing.
