iPhone users begin to receive payouts from $95 million Siri privacy settlement

iPhone users who experienced unintended Siri activations are now receiving payouts from a $95 million privacy settlement.

Summary

Apple is now distributing payouts from a $95 million settlement stemming from a 2019 class action lawsuit regarding the recording of Siri conversations. The lawsuit alleged “unlawful and intentional recording” of user interactions, though Apple denies any wrongdoing. To qualify, users needed to have purchased a Siri-enabled Apple device between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, and experienced an unintended Siri activation. While initial estimates suggested up to $20 per device with a maximum of $100, payouts are averaging around $8.02 per device, capped at $40.10.

The issue arose after reports that Apple contractors were overhearing private conversations while reviewing Siri recordings for quality assurance. Apple has since implemented changes, requiring users to opt-in to sharing recordings and discontinuing the use of external contractors for this purpose. The company maintains that Siri conversations were never used for marketing and were not linked to user accounts.

Payouts are being distributed via direct deposit, prepaid gift cards, or checks, and users are advised to check their spam folders or mailboxes.
