'Part of life': Aanand L Rai responds to Eros's lawsuit
Summary
Director Aanand L Rai has responded to a ₹84 crore lawsuit filed by Eros International Media Ltd, alleging intellectual property violations concerning his 2013 film 'Raanjhanaa'. Rai downplayed the dispute, stating that such issues are “part of life” when conducting business and should be handled by lawyers. He expressed uncertainty about the origins of the lawsuit, adding, “Anyone can say anything about anything at any time.”
Eros accuses Rai and his production company, Colour Yellow Media Entertainment LLP, of misusing 'Raanjhanaa's intellectual property in the promotion of 'Tere Ishk Mein', released in November 2025. Eros claims exclusive rights to the film’s copyright, trademarks, dialogues, characters, and remake rights, alleging these were used without permission to create a connection between the two films.
Specifically, Eros argues that a character in 'Tere Ishk Mein', Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, shares similarities with his role in 'Raanjhanaa', and that the protagonist’s emotional journey mirrors that of Kundan Shankar. Despite a cease-and-desist notice issued in July 2025, Eros claims marketing continued to portray 'Tere Ishk Mein' as a “spiritual sequel.” The case is scheduled to be heard in the Bombay High Court.
