Bayer agrees to $7.25B Roundup class-action settlement - UPI.com
Summary
Bayer, through its subsidiary Monsanto, has agreed to a $7.25 billion settlement over 21 years to resolve class-action lawsuits alleging that its Roundup weedkiller caused cancer. The settlement will establish a fund for current and future claimants diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. This agreement encompasses both the class action and a separate case, known as the Durnell case, currently before the Supreme Court.
Bayer CEO Bill Anderson stated the settlement provides “an essential path out of the litigation uncertainty” and allows the company to focus on innovation. He also emphasized the need for clearer regulations in American agriculture, citing the litigation costs. Monsanto maintains it has not admitted wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve existing and prevent future lawsuits.
The settlement covers individuals exposed to Roundup before Tuesday who have already been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma or receive a diagnosis within 16 years of the settlement’s final approval. Annual payments will be made into the settlement fund over the next 21 years.
