Snap Settles Lawsuit on App Effects

Los Angeles Business Journal
Snap Inc. settled a lawsuit alleging intentional addiction of children through its app's features, with financial terms undisclosed.

Summary

Snap Inc. has agreed to settle a lawsuit claiming the company intentionally designed its app to be addictive to children, joining Meta Platforms, YouTube, and TikTok in addressing similar allegations. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, argues that features like personalized algorithms, autoplay videos, and infinite scrolling contribute to depression, self-harm, and eating disorders among young users. Professor Ramesh Srinivasan of UCLA highlighted how platform algorithms prioritize attention-grabbing content. This settlement is one of three key cases selected from thousands to establish precedents for future litigation against social media companies regarding addiction.

This isn't the first time social media platforms have faced scrutiny; in 2021, leaked research from a former Meta employee, Frances Haugen, revealed Facebook's awareness of the negative impacts of Instagram. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously testified before Congress regarding harmful content on Facebook.

While social media companies often cite free speech principles, Srinivasan argues that algorithms create a false equivalency, as they actively curate and prioritize content based on engagement rather than simply providing a neutral platform.
