A pair of class-action lawsuits slams Costco’s iconic $4.99 rotisserie chicken
Summary
Costco’s widely popular $4.99 Kirkland Signature rotisserie chicken is at the center of two recently filed class-action lawsuits. The first, filed in California, alleges that Costco falsely advertised the chicken as preservative-free, claiming customers were misled despite the presence of carrageenan and sodium phosphate – additives used for moisture retention. Costco has since removed the 'preservative-free' labels. A second lawsuit, filed in Seattle, cites a study by the animal rights nonprofit Farm Forward, which claims the Lincoln Premium Poultry facility supplying Costco suffers from “systematic” salmonella contamination, with concerning rates of positive tests in both whole birds and chicken breasts. The complaint seeks damages for purchases made since 2019. Neither Costco nor the Nebraska plant have yet responded to requests for comment regarding the salmonella claims.
