Over 38,000 land settlement forms distributed to tea workers in Jorhat, Darrang, Morigaon
Summary
The Assam government initiated a program to grant land ownership to tea garden workers, distributing over 37,133 forms in Jorhat district alone on Monday. This move follows a law passed in December 2025 – The Assam Fixation of Ceiling on Land Holding (Amendment) Bill, 2025 – enabling housing ownership for over 3.33 lakh families across the state’s 825 tea gardens. Similar distributions occurred in Darrang, where 981 forms were distributed across six tea gardens, and Morigaon, with forms distributed at the Gopal Krishna Tea Estate. The initiative was launched by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and various local dignitaries attended events in each district. District commissioners urged beneficiaries to complete the forms carefully and avoid any potential exploitation by intermediaries. The program aims to provide land pattas to generations of tea workers residing in labour lines.
