The settlement stems from complaints by residents in southeast Arizona who reported their wells were drying up due to large-scale agricultural pumping. As part of the agreement, Riverview will remove 2,000 acres from irrigated crop production, and the $11 million will be used to fund new wells, water hauling, and improved groundwater access for affected communities. Riverview stated the deal was a “voluntary, proactive step” reflecting their commitment to water conservation, and that they apply similar practices at their farms in the Upper Midwest, including two massive dairy farms currently under development in North Dakota.
