Target to start sending out checks to employees as part of $4.7 million settlement

The Independent
Target will distribute $4.6 million to approximately 13,700 employees due to a settlement regarding unpaid wages for time spent on mandatory screenings and walks.

Summary

Target is set to begin issuing settlement checks totaling $4.6 million to around 13,700 current and former employees following a class action lawsuit, *Sadler v. Target Corp.*, filed in November 2022. The lawsuit, brought by Krystal Sadler on behalf of hourly workers at Target’s New Jersey distribution centers, alleged the company failed to compensate employees for all time worked, including mandatory security screenings and walks to and from workstations. While Target denied wrongdoing, they agreed to the settlement to avoid further litigation. Eligible employees at the Burlington, Perth Amboy, and Logan Township facilities from August 6, 2019, onward will receive pro-rata payments based on payroll records, and no action is required from employees to receive their share. A fairness hearing is scheduled for February 24, 2026, after which distribution will begin, with approximately $2.75 million allocated for employee payments, $1.53 million for attorney fees, and $10,000 for Sadler. Separately, a similar complaint has been filed in New York alleging unpaid walking time costs workers between $1,000 and $2,000 annually, potentially totaling over $2 million in unpaid wages.
