MT Tibetan settlement awaits inspections as Delhi HC orders action on unlicensed commercial establishments - Phayul
Summary
The Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to inspect and take action against unlicensed commercial establishments in Majnu Ka Tilla (MKT), a Tibetan settlement in North Delhi. This order came in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) raising concerns about public safety due to the operation of cafes, restaurants, and hotels without proper licenses, building plans, and fire safety clearances. The court noted the risks posed by unchecked commercialization in the densely populated area. The DDA informed the court that a suo motu complaint had already been registered by a Special Task Force (STF) to address these issues.
Dorje Tsering, the Tibetan Settlement Officer, stated that the Samyelling Tibetan Settlement has not yet received a notice but will fully cooperate with the authorities during the inspections and rectify any issues found. The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has also formed a committee to proactively address potential future problems.
Majnu Ka Tilla, established in the 1960s by Tibetan refugees, has evolved into a significant cultural hub and a popular culinary destination in Delhi. While welcoming lawful scrutiny, Dorje Tsering expressed some uncertainty about the motives behind the PIL, suggesting the possibility of vested interests, but affirmed the settlement’s commitment to compliance.
