Ex-worker sues Iowa airport food contractor alleging labor violations

Des Moines Register
A former employee is suing an Iowa airport food contractor, SSP America CID, alleging wage and hour law violations.

Summary

Tara Hill has filed a class action lawsuit against SSP America CID, a contractor operating food and beverage concessions at Iowa airports, alleging violations of state and federal wage-and-hour laws, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The lawsuit claims the company improperly utilized the tip credit provision of the FLSA, failing to inform employees about it, making illegal wage deductions, requiring employees to purchase work clothing, and assigning excessive non-tipped work like food preparation and cleaning. Hill alleges she was paid $6.75 per hour while working as a server, bartender, and cook at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids from August 2023 to September 2025. The suit seeks class action status to cover all affected servers and bartenders employed by SSP America CID over the past three years and aims to recover the difference between wages paid and the legally required minimum wage. SSP America CID has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
