Lancashire County Council to receive £310m funding boost under new government settlement
Summary
Lancashire County Council is set to benefit from a £310 million funding increase as part of a new government settlement, representing a 27% rise in its spending power. West Lancashire Borough Council will also receive an additional £1.3 million, a 7% increase. This funding is the first multi-year local government settlement in over a decade, offering financial certainty for long-term planning.
Labour MP Ashley Dalton praised the announcement, stating the funds would alleviate pressure on local authorities and improve essential services like care homes, libraries, roads, and street cleaning. The government asserts this new funding model replaces an outdated system, prioritizing allocations based on evidence and local need, particularly in deprived areas.
Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary Steve Reed described the settlement as a “turning point,” aiming to reverse a decade of cuts and enable investment in vital community resources. The goal is to end disparities in service access and ensure all communities receive the support they deserve, strengthening local services across Lancashire.
