CT Joins Lawsuit Against Rideshare Company Uber Alleging Deceptive, Unfair Practices

Ct News Junkie
Connecticut has joined a lawsuit against Uber, alleging deceptive practices regarding its Uber One subscription service.

Summary

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong announced the state’s participation in a lawsuit against Uber Technologies, LLC and Uber USA, LLC, alongside 21 other state and county law enforcement agencies and the Federal Trade Commission. The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that Uber employed deceptive and unfair practices in marketing and selling Uber One subscriptions. Specifically, the complaint claims Uber utilized negative option marketing with free trials that automatically charged consumers, misled customers about potential savings, and made cancellation of the subscription exceedingly difficult. Attorney General Tong stated that “Uber roped consumers into its subscription service under the guise of a ‘free’ trial, jumped the gun on charges, and then made it next to impossible to cancel when promised savings never materialized.” The lawsuit seeks restitution, penalties, costs, and an injunction against Uber for violations of the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act and the U.S. Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act. The coalition of states is led by Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown, and a trial is currently scheduled for February 2027.
