Homeowners can automatically claim $180 ‘heating’ payment thanks to $14million settlement...

The Sun
Homeowners who purchased heating oil from Peterson Oil between 2012 and 2025 may be eligible for an automatic $180 payment from a $14 million settlement.

Summary

A $14 million settlement has been reached with Peterson Oil, a heating oil company accused of blending biodiesel into its heating oil, causing damage to customers’ systems. Homeowners who purchased heating oil from Peterson Oil (also operating as Cleghorn Oil and Cape Discount Fuel) between January 1, 2012, and November 12, 2025, are eligible to claim. Claimants can receive compensation based on documented damages (up to $180 per incident with attestation) or a proportional payment based on the total gallons of fuel purchased. Settlement administrators have already identified many eligible claimants, but current owners of heating equipment who were not direct customers can still file a claim. Claim forms are available online, by phone, or by mail, with a deadline of February 11, 2026. The settlement fund will also cover attorney’s fees and administrative costs.
