GM Flubbed a Recall, Now It’s Facing a Massive Lawsuit

General Motors faces a class-action lawsuit after a recall fix for 6.2-liter V8 engines allegedly failed to resolve the underlying issue.

Summary

General Motors is currently embroiled in a class-action lawsuit concerning its 6.2-liter V8 L87 engines. The lawsuit stems from a recall issued in April, which customers claim did not adequately address a critical defect. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had received over 28,000 complaints regarding failures of the engine’s crankshaft, bearings, and connecting rods, leading to an investigation and the initial recall of nearly 600,000 trucks and SUVs, with an additional 286,000 vehicles subsequently investigated.

The affected vehicles include popular models from 2019 to 2024, such as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade. While GM attempted a fix by specifying a new engine oil, the lawsuit, consolidated as *Powell v. General Motors*, argues this measure failed to resolve the core problem.

Reports indicate the engine defect has been linked to at least 12 crashes and 12 injuries. Eleven additional lawsuits have been combined with the initial case, including *Hermanowicz v. General Motors*, filed in October, highlighting the widespread concern over the engine’s reliability and the effectiveness of GM’s response.
