Canadians who bought beef could be eligible for share of $8M in price-fixing class-action
Summary
A proposed class-action settlement worth nearly $8 million has been reached between Canadian beef purchasers and two major meat processors, JBS and National Beef. The lawsuit alleged that the companies participated in an unlawful conspiracy to fix beef prices starting in January 2015. JBS has agreed to pay $7,498,700, while National Beef has agreed to pay $495,000. The settlement excludes products purchased by the food service industry. The class is divided into two groups: a B.C. settlement class for all Canadians and a Quebec settlement class for consumers who bought beef in Quebec. An approval hearing for the B.C. class is scheduled for September 10, 2026, while the Quebec hearing is set for December 1, 2026. The settlement requires court approval and does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing. Eligible Canadians who wish to opt out must do so by August 10, 2026.
