Power Generators Praise Government Over Debt Settlement | News Ghana
Summary
Ghana’s Independent Power Generators (IPGs) have expressed their approval of the government’s resolution of $1.47 billion in outstanding energy sector debts, highlighting it as a crucial step towards financial recovery and renewed investor trust within the nation’s power industry. Payments made to independent power producers in 2025 have alleviated long-standing liquidity issues, enhancing cash flow, operational planning, and overall market confidence.
The settlement included significant payments to key power generators such as Karpowership Ghana ($120 million), Cenpower Generation ($59.4 million), and Sunon Asogli Ghana ($54 million), totaling approximately $392.8 million to independent power producers. The Ministry of Finance also fully repaid $597.15 million, including interest, drawn on a World Bank Partial Risk Guarantee (PRG), restoring the facility and reinforcing Ghana’s international credibility. Outstanding gas invoices to ENI and Vitol, totaling $480 million, were also settled.
The IPGs believe this action signals Ghana’s commitment to fulfilling its contractual obligations and attracting investment in a competitive emerging market. Improved payment discipline is expected to lower risk, attract financing, and support modernization and expansion of the power sector, which is vital for Ghana’s economic transformation and industrial growth. The government has assured stakeholders that unchecked energy sector debt accumulation is a thing of the past, pledging continued financial discipline.
