Here's who qualifies for the Hyundai and Kia 'TikTok theft' relief claims

New York Post
Hyundai and Kia are offering a $9 million settlement to owners affected by a TikTok-fueled theft trend targeting vehicles lacking anti-theft devices.

Summary

Hyundai and Kia have agreed to a $9 million class action settlement for owners whose vehicles were stolen due to a viral TikTok trend demonstrating how easily certain models could be compromised. The trend, which began in 2022, involved thieves using a USB cable and screwdriver to steal cars lacking engine immobilizers. Eligible vehicle owners in 35 states, including New York and New Jersey, can receive up to $4,500 for total vehicle loss, $2,250 for partial losses, and up to $375 for related expenses.

To qualify, owners or lessees must have owned a 2011-2022 Kia or Hyundai model without an engine immobilizer or who hadn't received a software update, and experienced a theft or attempted theft before receiving a free cylinder protector. Eligible Hyundai models include Accent, Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Kona, Palisade, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson, Veloster, and Venue, while eligible Kia models include Forte, K5, Optima, Rio, Sedona, Seltos, Sorento, Soul, and Sportage.

Vehicle owners can confirm their eligibility and submit claims through the settlement website using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) until March 31, 2027. Approximately seven million Hyundai and Kia vehicles have since received anti-theft upgrades, addressing the initial vulnerability that sparked the thefts.
