Paramount’s Warner Concessions In UK Give “Powerful Credibility” To U.S. Lawsuit, Says Anti-Merger Group

Deadline
The anti-merger group Block the Merger claims Paramount's UK concessions bolster the US lawsuit attempting to block the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger.

Summary

The creative industries coalition Block the Merger has stated that Paramount's antitrust commitments in the UK provide "powerful credibility" to the ongoing U.S. lawsuit. The legal action, led by 12 state attorneys general, seeks to block the $111 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, alleging it will stifle competition in film distribution and cable licensing.

To secure UK approval, Paramount agreed to a "deed of covenant" with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. These binding remedies, lasting five years, include maintaining the editorial independence of news services like Channel 5 News from CBS News and CNN International, and preventing the combination of linear channels with streaming services. The group also noted that fair access to archives for CNN, CBS, and Channel 5 must be maintained.

Despite these concessions, Block the Merger maintains that the merger represents a dangerous consolidation that threatens film, entertainment, and independent press globally. The U.S. antitrust trial regarding this merger is scheduled to commence in March 2027.
