SC hopeful of settlement in Sunjay Kapur family inheritance row | India News

Hindustan Times
The Supreme Court expressed optimism regarding the ongoing mediation to resolve the Sunjay Kapur family inheritance dispute.

Summary

The Supreme Court, through a bench of justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran, has noted satisfactory progress in the mediation process aimed at resolving the high-stakes inheritance dispute within the family of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur. Following a report by mediator former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, the court observed that the warring factions are cooperating and exploring a "holistic settlement of their claims." The mediation, which involves a senior chartered accountant and a tax expert, has been extended until November 2.

The dispute is multifaceted, involving Rani Kapur, who alleges that her son Sunjay Kapur and his wife Priya Kapur exploited her medical condition in 2017 to transfer assets into a family trust without her consent. Additionally, Sunjay Kapur's children from his previous marriage with Karisma Kapoor have challenged Priya Kapur's control over the estate, alleging forgery of a will. The Delhi High Court has previously granted interim protection to prevent the creation of third-party rights over the disputed assets.

During the proceedings, the Supreme Court urged all parties to approach the mediation with an "open mind and open heart" to avoid years of further litigation. The court has also implemented measures to prevent the aggravation of tensions, such as restraining Raghuvanshi Investment Private Limited from making certain appointments and ensuring that statutory compliances do not disrupt the mediation process.
