The West Bengal government has initiated talks with Tata Group to resolve the Singur land dispute through an out-of-court settlement. This follows an arbitration tribunal's May 2023 ruling ordering WBIDC to pay Tata Motors Rs 766 crore in compensation for losses from its relocated Nano car plant. The Calcutta High Court had previously refused to stay the award and directed WBIDC to list immovable properties to secure payment. State officials, including advocate general Surojit Nath Mitra, are overseeing negotiations, with the government expressing interest in attracting Tata Group's industrial investment to Singur. The dispute stems from Tata Motors' 2008 relocation of its manufacturing facility after a prolonged land conflict, during which the company invested over Rs 1,000 crore.
