Trump appeals ruling questioning his $10 billion IRS lawsuit over leaked tax records and settlement

Donald Trump, along with his sons and the Trump Organization, has filed an appeal against a federal judge's ruling regarding his $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). US District Judge Kathleen Williams previously ruled that the lawsuit was filed for an "improper purpose" to gain judicial legitimacy for a settlement lacking a legal basis. The original litigation arose from the unauthorized leak of Trump's tax records by a former IRS contractor.

The controversial settlement involved the Justice Department agreeing to create a $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization" fund to compensate victims of government abuse. It also reportedly included provisions to prevent the government from pursuing certain past tax claims against Trump and his family. Judge Williams criticized the move, noting that Trump's presidential authority over the agencies involved raised significant concerns regarding the settlement's legitimacy.

As a result of the ruling, the judge imposed several sanctions, including barring attorney Daniel Epstein from the Southern District of Florida federal court for one year and referring attorney Alejandro Brito to the Florida Bar. The legal battle has also caused political friction, with Republican Senators withholding support for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche's nomination unless the fund is shut down. Trump has since stated that the fund "is dead."
