Formula 1 parent company reaches $3M settlement in Las Vegas Grand Prix 2023 tickets lawsuit

Liberty Media settled a class-action lawsuit over the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix opening-night practice disruption for about $3 million.

Summary

Liberty Media, the parent company of Formula 1 and promoter of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, has agreed to a roughly $3 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit filed by spectators over the disrupted opening-night practice session of the inaugural 2023 race. The practice was halted after just nine minutes when Carlos Sainz Jr.'s Ferrari struck a loose water valve cover, causing significant damage; fans were cleared from the viewing areas and the session did not resume until early the next morning. Under the settlement, holders of tickets for only that practice session or those who purchased three-night tickets are eligible to receive compensation, with claims required to be filed by August 27. Liberty Media and the Las Vegas Grand Prix did not admit fault, and a final approval hearing is set for November 4 before the U.S. District Court of Nevada. Despite the troubled start, the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix itself was praised as one of the season's best races, and Formula 1 has since secured a ten‑year extension keeping the event in Las Vegas through at least 2037.
