Tesla settles with three workers as Fremont factory racism cases by hundreds of workers continue

Tesla has reached a confidential settlement with three Black former employees, including Marcus Vaughn, who launched a landmark racial-discrimination lawsuit in 2017. The agreement resolves the claims of Vaughn, Titus McCaleb, and Monica Chatman, but it does not end the broader legal battle. The original case helped ignite a wave of litigation involving hundreds of current and former workers alleging rampant racism at the company's Fremont factory. The legal action has since fractured into multiple lawsuits, with over 850 workers filing claims. The allegations include the presence of scrawled nooses, swastikas, and racial slurs, as well as the segregation of Black workers into the most dangerous and lowest-paid jobs. Workers reported being called racial slurs and heard managers refer to the factory as "The Plantation." Tesla has denied liability, arguing that the plaintiffs failed to establish harassment and that the company cannot be held responsible for the actions of non-supervisory employees. The State of California and the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have also filed lawsuits against Tesla based on these allegations.
