B.C. class-action lawsuit targets Starbucks' claim that it buys ethical beans

A proposed class-action lawsuit filed in the B.C. Supreme Court alleges that Starbucks engaged in deceptive marketing practices. The lawsuit claims the company cannot reliably ensure its coffee beans are sourced without forced, exploitative, or child labor, despite marketing claims to the contrary. It further alleges that Starbucks fails to disclose the use of volatile organic compounds, such as benzene and toluene, used in its decaffeination process, which is marketed as "100 per cent Arabica."

The lawsuit, filed by representative plaintiff Erin Tosh, argues that these omissions prevent consumers from making informed decisions and cause economic loss, as customers pay a premium for products based on misleading ethical and quality claims. The legal action seeks restitution for affected customers across Canada, excluding Quebec.

Starbucks has responded to the allegations, stating they are inaccurate and misrepresent both the company's sourcing practices and the integrity of its farmer equity programs. No allegations have been proven in court, and the lawsuit must still be certified before proceeding to trial.
