FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has publicly questioned the legitimacy of California's antitrust lawsuit aimed at blocking the $110 billion merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery. Carr's comments follow reports suggesting that California Attorney General Rob Bonta might drop the legal challenge if CNN were spun off from the deal, a claim Bonta has since denied.
The lawsuit, filed by Bonta and 11 other state attorneys general, seeks a temporary restraining order to block the merger. Rather than focusing on news service consolidation, the legal challenge alleges that the merger's consolidation of movie studios and basic cable TV licensing would violate antitrust laws. A hearing regarding a preliminary injunction is scheduled for this Friday.
