Metaplanet to Research Bitcoin Collateral for Round-the-Clock Bond Settlement

Bitcoin News
Metaplanet is studying bitcoin-backed digital bonds with partners, aiming to use BTC as collateral for 24/7 settled yen-denominated credit products.

Summary

Metaplanet Inc. has announced a joint study with JPYC and Progmat to explore bitcoin-backed digital bonds that would be settled 24/7 through a yen‑stablecoin and managed with security tokens. The company, which holds roughly 43,000 BTC (worth about $2.75 billion), intends to use its treasury as collateral to create tokenized corporate bonds that can trade and accrue interest continuously, a feature not supported by Japan’s current corporate bond framework. To facilitate this, Metaplanet acquired Siiibo Securities, a Type‑1 financial instruments license holder, which will become Metaplanet Securities and provide access to about 250,000 investors. The project, dubbed Project NOVA, will involve four entities—Metaplanet, Metaplanet Securities, JPYC, and Progmat—to cover collateral, token representation, and settlement infrastructure. While no product, rate, or issuance date has been set and regulatory approval in Japan remains pending, the initiative represents a significant shift from simply holding bitcoin to leveraging it as credit enhancement and collateral for a new class of digital debt instruments.
