If you had Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, you might be getting money this month
Summary
Millions of Blue Cross Blue Shield customers who filed claims in an antitrust class-action lawsuit will start receiving checks in May, nearly six years after the litigation began. This $2.67 billion settlement arises from a class action antitrust lawsuit that alleged Blue Cross Blue Shield limited competition in the health insurance market, resulting in higher costs for consumers. The lawsuit was filed in Alabama under the title "Blue Cross Blue Shield Antitrust Litigation MDL 2406, N.D. Ala. Master File No. 2:13-cv-20000-RDP." The settlement, reached in October 2020, received final approval from a judge last summer. Blue Cross has denied the allegations despite agreeing to the settlement. According to NBC, approximately $1.9 billion is being allocated to reimbursements for subscribers who filed claims, with $700 million going to the attorneys for the case. The initial distributions are going to members of the Damages Class, one of two settlement groups established in the case. Individuals who received coverage under any Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance or administrative services plan between February 2008 and October 2020 could be eligible for payments. According to Blue Cross Blue Shield, the claim submission deadline passed on July 29, 2025. They began issuing claim notices on February 16, 2026, with claimants receiving an email or mail notification regarding their notice. From there, they can log in to a portal to view or download the notice. The payments will continue on a rolling basis. The company also agreed to implement operational changes that plaintiffs believe will make the health insurance market more competitive.
