Greenpeace Australia Pacific has settled a lawsuit against Woodside regarding misleading climate claims.

Summary

Greenpeace Australia Pacific has agreed to settle a lawsuit filed against fossil fuel multinational Woodside in the Federal Court of Australia. The lawsuit, initiated in December 2023, alleged that Woodside had misrepresented its prior emissions reductions and its targets for 2025, 2030, and 2050. Greenpeace argued that Woodside's claims about achieving substantial reductions in scope 1 and scope 2 emissions were misleading because the company relies heavily on offsets. Furthermore, Greenpeace claimed that Woodside's targets were inconsistent with the Paris Agreement because they exclude scope 3 emissions, which account for over 90% of the company's emissions, and because Woodside plans to expand its oil and gas production. During the legal proceedings, Woodside altered its public representation of its climate strategy, such as removing a 'Net zero by 2050 or sooner' banner from its website. Greenpeace's Head of Climate and Energy, Joe Rafalowicz, stated that the settlement does not signal the end of their campaign against Woodside's gas projects, emphasizing that the court of public opinion will continue to judge the company. The settlement agreement stipulates that the proceeding will be dismissed with each party bearing its own costs.
