'Systemic Lapses': Frontier Slams American's Safety Culture In 2nd Collision Lawsuit
Summary
Frontier Airlines has filed a second lawsuit against American Airlines following two separate collision incidents in 2024, alleging “systemic lapses” in American’s safety culture. The current claim seeks $335,000 to cover the remaining 50% of repair costs for an A321 damaged in a gate collision at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in November 2024. American previously settled a related lawsuit, covering half of the $670,387.45 repair bill and associated losses.
The incident involved an American Airlines Boeing 777-200LR clipping the wing of a parked Frontier Airbus A321, causing six days of downtime for the Frontier aircraft. Frontier argues that American was “on notice of systemic deficiencies” but failed to address them, pointing to a separate incident in March 2024 at Miami International Airport (MIA) where another American Airlines aircraft severely damaged a Frontier plane, requiring six months of repairs and resulting in a $100,000 damage claim.
Frontier, founded in 1994 and operating a fleet of Airbus aircraft, is growing rapidly with over 170 planes and plans to introduce a First Class product this year. The airline’s legal actions suggest a pattern of safety concerns with American Airlines’ operations, prompting a demand for corrective measures and full compensation for damages.
