Utah to receive millions in multi-state settlement against Albertsons for company’s role in opioid crisis
Summary
Utah is set to receive at least $10.7 million as part of a multi-state settlement with Albertsons, stemming from allegations that the company played a role in fueling the nationwide opioid epidemic. The lawsuit, represented by Baron & Budd, argued that Albertsons failed to adequately monitor prescriptions for “red flags,” potentially contributing to the rise in opioid addiction, overdose deaths, and the subsequent increase in heroin and fentanyl use. Albertsons has agreed to pay over $773.7 million nationally as part of the settlement. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown stated the agreement demonstrates a commitment to protecting Utah families and delivering meaningful results. The funds received by Utah will be allocated to the state’s opioid abatement fund, supporting community resources for addiction treatment, recovery services, and prevention efforts. Margaret Woolley Busse, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Commerce, emphasized the settlement’s importance in holding accountable those who contributed to the crisis and providing vital resources to save lives.
