Businesses affected by one of world’s longest Covid lockdowns to receive $125m from Victorian government
Summary
The Victorian government has agreed to a $125m settlement with businesses financially affected by the state’s 2020 Covid-19 lockdowns, resolving a class action lawsuit brought before the supreme court. Businesses, including 5 Boroughs NY Pty Ltd, argued they suffered economic losses due to restrictions preventing customers from visiting physical stores between July and October 2020. The trial, initially scheduled for March 10th, was vacated after a settlement was reached. While the specific terms remain confidential, the $125m covers all costs and interest.
The Victorian government maintains its stance that the lockdown measures were necessary to protect public health, stating the settlement avoids further legal proceedings.
Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, the law firm representing the businesses, described the settlement as a “significant outcome” and acknowledged the hardship faced by Victorian retail businesses during that period, hoping the funds will provide some relief. Formal court approval is still required before the funds are distributed to eligible businesses.
