City settles lawsuit in the death of Herman Whitfield III
Summary
The city of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) have agreed to a $3.75 million settlement with the family of Herman Whitfield III, who died in April 2022 following an encounter with police. While the city is not admitting any wrongdoing, the settlement will be paid to Whitfield’s estate through January 2028. Two IMPD officers, Adam Ahmad and Steven Sanchez, were previously charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, and battery in connection with Whitfield’s death, but were found not guilty in December 2024 after a two-hour jury deliberation.
The incident began when Whitfield’s mother called 911 requesting an ambulance due to a mental health crisis. Body camera footage shows officers attempting to assist Whitfield, followed by Officer Sanchez using a taser twice before officers restrained Whitfield and placed him in handcuffs. Prosecutors argued Whitfield was held prone for several minutes, while the defense attributed his death to “THC-induced arrhythmia.” The prosecution countered that Whitfield died from “prone restraint cardiac arrest.” The case drew attention to the complexities of in-custody deaths and the role of THC in such incidents, with conflicting expert testimony presented during the trial.
