Light & Wonder settles Aristocrat lawsuit with $190m payout
Summary
Light & Wonder Inc. has agreed to pay USD $127.5 million (approximately AUD $190 million) to Aristocrat Leisure Ltd. to resolve litigation concerning the alleged misappropriation of intellectual property. The dispute stemmed from Aristocrat’s claims that elements of its game mathematics and copyright material were used in two Light & Wonder games, “Dragon Train” and “Jewel of the Dragon.” As part of the settlement, Light & Wonder will cease and remove these games globally and refrain from using Aristocrat’s intellectual property in future developments. Both companies will dismiss all related claims in Australia and the United States.
Light & Wonder CEO Matt Wilson stated the company is “pleased to resolve this matter” and emphasized their commitment to respecting intellectual property rights. The company attributed the issue to the actions of a former employee and has implemented strengthened internal processes to prevent similar incidents. Wilson affirmed that the settlement protects the interests of customers, employees, and shareholders.
The resolution of this litigation removes a significant uncertainty for Light & Wonder, allowing the company to focus on its core business and growth strategy, prioritizing innovation and compliance. Over the past 12 months, Light & Wonder shares have risen 12%, outperforming the S&P/ASX 200 Index.
