Bad breakup: GlobalX Airlines revokes lawsuit vs. Ascent Global Logistics
Summary
Global Crossing Airlines (GlobalX) has dismissed a $30 million breach-of-contract lawsuit against its former largest shareholder, Ascent Global Logistics, and terminated their exclusive brokerage agreement. The legal dispute arose after GlobalX alleged that Ascent failed to honor an agreement to provide air cargo business, instead directing work to USA Jet Airlines. As part of the settlement, GlobalX has agreed to specific payment terms for amounts owed to Ascent.
The decision comes amid significant financial challenges for GlobalX's cargo division. The company reported a 50% year-over-year drop in cargo revenue for the second quarter, with the cargo business currently costing the company approximately $1 million per month. While passenger operations remain the primary economic driver, the freighter fleet—consisting of Airbus A321 narrowbody converted freighters—has struggled with inconsistent business and market pressures.
To mitigate losses, GlobalX management is exploring various options for the freighter fleet, including parking aircraft, returning them to lessors, subleasing, or selling them. Despite the termination of the agreement with Ascent, the company faces ongoing pressure from excess capacity and low market rates in the regional freight market.
