$7.4 billion Purdue Pharma settlement becomes effective, Nevada to receive nearly $58 million
Summary
A $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family has become legally effective, concluding nearly a decade of multistate investigations and litigation over their role in fueling the U.S. opioid crisis. Attorneys general from 55 states and territories signed the agreement, which resolves claims against Purdue and the Sacklers for producing and aggressively marketing opioids. Nevada, which sued Purdue in June 2025, is expected to receive $57,941,815.03, most of which will be distributed in the first three years and directed to the Fund for a Resilient Nevada to support treatment, prevention, and recovery programs. The settlement requires the Sacklers to pay more than $1.5 billion initially and additional installments through May 2029, while Purdue pays approximately $900 million upfront. It also permanently bars the Sacklers from selling opioids in the United States, transfers Purdue’s manufacturing operations to Knoa Pharma LLC under independent oversight with strict limits on marketing and diversion, and mandates public release of more than 30 million documents related to Purdue’s opioid business. With this settlement, Nevada has secured over $1.2 billion in total opioid settlement funds to strengthen community response and recovery efforts.
