Attorney General Files Lawsuit Challenging Sable Oil-Production Restart
Summary
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Energy, challenging its decision to allow Sable Offshore Corp. to restart oil production at the Santa Ynez Unit. The lawsuit alleges that Secretary of Energy Chris Wright improperly used the Defense Production Act to bypass state and federal regulations, calling it a “breathtaking power grab.” Bonta argues the decision undermines California’s environmental and safety laws, as well as the state’s sovereignty.
The dispute stems from President Trump’s invocation of the Defense Production Act in March, ordering Sable to restart production. Sable purchased the Santa Ynez Unit in 2024, which includes offshore platforms and pipelines, one of which caused the 2015 Refugio oil spill, releasing nearly 120,000 gallons of oil. Sable had not obtained necessary approvals from the State Fire Marshal and lacked current easement agreements for pipelines through Gaviota State Park when it resumed operations.
Assemblymember Gregg Hart praised the lawsuit, emphasizing the need to protect state rights and prevent further environmental damage. The Department of Energy and Sable Offshore Corp. have not yet responded to requests for comment. Bonta has pledged to protect California’s rights and coastlines, asserting that the Trump administration and Sable are prioritizing profit over safety and legal compliance.
