Upstate NY university sued for sicko bathroom cams placed by student: 'A travesty'
Summary
Marist University in Poughkeepsie, New York, is facing a lawsuit alleging negligence in protecting students from a former student, Kyle Petrozzi, who is accused of installing hidden cameras in unisex bathrooms within Dyson Hall. Petrozzi, 23, was indicted on 16 felony charges after the cameras were discovered in May 2025, but the lawsuit claims the university failed to adequately maintain the bathrooms, allowing the surveillance to continue for at least two weeks. The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, alleges emotional distress and anxiety as a result of being unknowingly recorded. Attorneys estimate up to 80 students may have been affected.
The lawsuit claims Marist, which charges $72,000 annually for tuition and housing, did not discover the cameras despite multiple people’s private moments being recorded. The cameras were reportedly taped to pipes under sinks, providing a view of the toilets. The discovery occurred when a student found a camera while retrieving a dropped phone.
Marist University stated they took immediate action upon discovering the cameras and cooperated with investigators. Petrozzi’s lawyer cited his client’s history of Crohn’s disease and a learning disability as contributing factors, stating he is undergoing intensive treatment and has pleaded not guilty. The case is ongoing, and the fate of the recorded footage remains unclear.
