Qantas to cough up $105million to avoid class action over controversial Covid flight credits

Daily Mail Online
Qantas will pay $105 million to settle a class action regarding Covid-19 flight credits, without admitting liability.

Summary

Qantas has agreed to a $105 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit concerning its handling of flight credits issued during the Covid-19 pandemic. The lawsuit, filed by Echo Law in 2023, alleged that Qantas breached its contractual obligations to customers whose flights were cancelled between 2020 and November 2022, misled them about refund options, and engaged in unconscionable conduct. Qantas maintained it had already refunded over $1 billion and initially rejected the claims, but ultimately chose to settle the case, with the agreement pending approval from the Federal Court of Australia. The airline stated the settlement was already provisioned for and will not impact underlying earnings. In August 2023, Qantas removed expiry dates on pandemic-era flight credits, allowing customers to request cash refunds indefinitely.
