Texas food banks to receive more than 2M eggs after settlement involving AG Ken Paxton
Summary
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has finalized a settlement with Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. following a lawsuit alleging price gouging during the COVID-19 pandemic. The settlement requires Cal-Maine to donate approximately 2.16 million eggs to food banks across Texas over the next four months. Donations will be distributed to 18 food banks, with significant allocations to those in Central, North, and East Texas, as well as the Rio Grande Valley and El Paso.
According to the lawsuit, Cal-Maine allegedly increased egg prices by around 300%. The settlement includes specific donation amounts for each food bank, ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 dozen eggs.
Paxton stated, “My office will crack down on any corporation illegally raising prices in Texas.” Cal-Maine is also now prohibited from raising egg prices during designated disaster periods to prevent future price gouging.
