Norwegian Cruise Line pays back NC customers in settlement over COVID-19 sales tactics: NCAG
Summary
Norwegian Cruise Line has agreed to pay back customers in North Carolina and 11 other states following a settlement with attorneys general regarding its sales and cancellation practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The North Carolina Attorney General’s Office accused Norwegian of misleading customers in 2020 by providing false information about safety precautions and the virus to encourage bookings. As part of the settlement, Norwegian has pledged to issue over $3 billion in reimbursements nationwide, including over $2.6 billion in credit card refunds and over $500 million in future cruise credits.
The agreement prohibits Norwegian from using deceptive sales tactics and prioritizing sales over consumer safety during declared disasters. The company is also required to implement mandatory sales training and obtain senior management approval for sales communications during disaster declarations. Furthermore, Norwegian must clearly display cancellation policies and available remedies on its website when a disaster is declared.
North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson stated, “Norwegian lied to make sales. People deserve accurate information when they decide how to spend their money and they didn’t get it. It’s right that Norwegian is paying them back.”
