Dallas to pay $11.3M to settle downtown land dispute
Summary
The Dallas City Council approved a $11.3 million settlement on February 25, 2026, to resolve a condemnation lawsuit and acquire land near the former Dallas Morning News building for the expansion of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. The land, covering over 36,000 square feet, was initially owned by Charter DMN Holdings LP, but was sold to WFAA-TV in January. WFAA-TV will receive the settlement proceeds. The city initially offered $6.55 million for the property, but the owners rejected the bid, leading to the lawsuit. City officials state the land is crucial for accommodating the Texas Department of Transportation’s Interstate 30 widening project and avoiding Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Demolition of parts of the convention center has begun, with an expected completion date of 2029. The city previously acquired a larger parcel of the former newspaper’s property for up to $45.1 million in June 2025.
