FID Secures $1.5m Settlement, Vehicle Forfeiture Following Drug Case
Summary
The Financial Investigations Division (FID) has secured a $1.5 million cash settlement and the forfeiture of a 2013 Toyota Corolla Axio following a drug trafficking case prosecuted in Manchester. The case originated from a July 25, 2024 interception by the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) where Mahlon Davis was found with cannabis and cocaine. Davis was convicted and fined over $600,000, receiving a two-year suspended sentence.
Following the criminal proceedings, the FID pursued forfeiture and a pecuniary penalty order under the Proceeds of Crime Act, initially assessing the total benefit of the criminal conduct at $5.1 million. Davis ultimately agreed to pay $1.5 million to the Accountant General's Department and surrender the vehicle, also settling the outstanding loan balance of $98,000 plus interest.
Courtney Smith, Director of Legal Services at the FID, emphasized that this outcome demonstrates the agency’s commitment to recovering assets derived from criminal activity. He stated that the agency aims to disrupt criminal interference and ensure that proceeds of crime are addressed through due process, reinforcing the principle that criminal conduct should not yield lasting benefits.
